Firing pan with lid for base metal kiln firing - stainless steel.
Base metal clays like copper, bronze, iron and brass, should be fired in a kiln buried in activated carbon (though there are some versions that can be torch fired). This is due to the copper in the material. Copper oxidises when heated and exposed to oxygen (the same reason why sterling silver goes black when heated and needs pickling), so we create an oxygen starved environment by burying it in carbon allowing the particles to sinter.
You need to contain the carbon in a stainless steel pan which can survive heat for a long period without breaking down. Containers made from ceramic fibre blocks, glass, or thick ceramics will severely affect the firing time and require a longer hold (and possibly ramp speed), and heat sensitive metals like aluminium, will not work.
WHICH SIZE PAN SHALL I GET?
The benefit of the Shallow pan is less risk of under-firing because the heat can penetrate the carbon a lot quicker and less carbon is need to fill the pan.
The benefit of the Standard pan is that you can fit more or larger items in.
WILL IT FIT MY KILN?
These pans will fit a Prometheus PRO7 and a Paragon SC2 kiln or larger - they will not fit the Kitiki MiniKiln, Prometheus MiniKiln or Creative Metal Clay Kiln. We suggest you measure your firing chamber before ordering.

If you want a pan for a smaller kiln, have a look at the smaller firing tins or firing boxes instead.

HOW MUCH CARBON DO I NEED?
Approx 1/2 litre of carbon would fill the shallow pan, and 1 litre would fill the standard pan. Please note: these pans will go black and flake when heated, and the lid might warp slightly. This does not affect the functionality of the product, but you might need to vacuum your kiln after use.
